Naran and Kaghan are the crown jewels of Pakistani summer tourism. Alpine forests, glacier-fed rivers, Lake Saif-ul-Malook shining under a full moon, and the wild rush of driving Babusar Top at 13,700 feet — it’s the trip everyone wants to make at least once.

Where Are Naran and Kaghan, Exactly?

Kaghan Valley is a long alpine valley in the Mansehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, part of Hazara Division. Naran is a small tourist town roughly halfway up the valley, at 8,200 feet. From Naran, the road continues past Lake Saif-ul-Malook, then climbs over Babusar Top (the highest driveable pass in Pakistan open to standard traffic) before dropping into Chilas on the Karakoram Highway.

Kaghan (the village) is further down the valley, closer to Balakot. Most tourists say “Naran-Kaghan” together — you drive through both.

Distance and Route

From Islamabad

Roughly 245 km. Total drive time: 6–7 hours in normal conditions. Route: Islamabad → M-1 Motorway → Hasan Abdal → Hazara Motorway (M-15) → Mansehra → Balakot → Kaghan → Naran.

From Lahore

Roughly 620 km. Total drive time: 11–13 hours (recommended split across two days). Route: Lahore → M-2 Motorway → Islamabad → M-1 → Hazara Motorway → Balakot → Naran. Many families overnight in Islamabad or Balakot to break the drive.

From Karachi

Too far for one car trip; most Karachi travelers fly to Islamabad then rent a car for the Naran leg from Islamabad.

Best Time to Visit Naran-Kaghan

May–June: Rivers full, valley greenest, weather perfect. Lake Saif-ul-Malook thawing but often still partly frozen in May.
July–August: Peak season. Babusar Top open, all attractions accessible. Also the busiest — book vehicles and hotels weeks in advance.
September: Fewer crowds, still beautiful, slight autumn colors starting. Excellent travel window.
October: Late-season chill, some attractions closing. Babusar Top may close by late October.
November–April: Naran is essentially closed. Babusar shuts, most hotels close, roads dangerous with snow.

Which Vehicle Should You Rent for Naran-Kaghan?

This depends entirely on your group size and comfort priority. Options:

Small family (4–5 people): Toyota Fortuner or Toyota Prado. Ground clearance handles the mountain roads well; ride comfort is excellent. Rs. 20,000–30,000 per day.
Larger family (6–8): Two SUVs, or a Grand Cabin. The Grand Cabin is more economical if you’re all going the same route.
Group tour (10–14): Toyota Grand Cabin. The default and best option. Rs. 18,000–22,000 per day including fuel.
Large group (16+): Toyota Coaster. Fine for the main Naran-Kaghan road; less ideal beyond Naran towards Lake Saif-ul-Malook or Babusar.
VIP or luxury tour: V8 Land Cruiser. Maximum comfort, ideal for elderly parents or a premium experience.

Important: For the road beyond Naran up to Lake Saif-ul-Malook, most rental vehicles stop at Naran and you switch to a local 4×4 jeep for the final rocky stretch. This is standard — it’s a 30-minute jeep ride each way, arranged locally.

3-Day Weekend Trip (from Islamabad)

Day 1: Islamabad → Balakot → Kaghan → Naran (arrive by evening). Overnight in Naran.
Day 2: Naran → Lake Saif-ul-Malook (local jeep) → back to Naran → optional Lulusar Lake if weather allows. Overnight in Naran.
Day 3: Naran → Balakot → Islamabad.

5-Day Comprehensive Tour

Day 1: Islamabad → Balakot → Shogran (side trip) → Kaghan → Naran.
Day 2: Lake Saif-ul-Malook + Naran exploration.
Day 3: Naran → Lulusar Lake → Babusar Top → back to Naran (weather permitting).
Day 4: Naran → Shogran (proper stay) → Kiwai.
Day 5: Return to Islamabad or Lahore.

7-Day Extended (Naran + Chilas + Fairy Meadows base)

Extends the trip over Babusar Top down to Chilas on the KKH, adding Fairy Meadows base as an optional add-on. Requires more careful vehicle choice (V8 or Prado) and a driver very familiar with Babusar.

What Does a Naran-Kaghan Tour Cost? (With Driver, Without Fuel)

Important: All rates below are quoted with a professional driver but excluding fuel. Fuel is paid separately by the customer at actual consumption. Driver meals: Rs. 500 per day (in-city) / Rs. 2,000 per day (outstation).

Where to Stay in Naran-Kaghan

Naran has hotels in every category — from basic guesthouses at Rs. 3,000/night to premium hotels like Pine Park, Elegance, and PTDC Motels at Rs. 8,000–20,000/night. Shogran and Kiwai also have good options if you want quieter accommodation.

Book hotels early for July–August. Weekends fill up especially fast.

What to Pack for a Naran-Kaghan Trip

Warm clothes even in summer. Naran night temperatures drop to 8–12°C in July.
Rain jacket. Sudden showers happen frequently.
Comfortable walking shoes. Grippy soles for lakeside and rocky sections.
Sunscreen and sunglasses. UV is intense at altitude.
Cash. ATMs beyond Balakot are unreliable. Naran has some but don’t count on it.
Basic medications. Motion sickness pills for winding roads, paracetamol, altitude-friendly essentials.
Camera and power bank. Charging can be intermittent in remote hotels.
Copies of CNICs. Some check posts still note traveller details.

Tips for Renting a Car for Naran-Kaghan

Book at least 3–4 weeks ahead for July–August. Quality vehicles get taken fast.
Choose the right vehicle for your group and comfort level. A Corolla will make it to Naran, but won’t be enjoyable. Don’t cheap out on the vehicle.
Confirm driver has done the route recently. Especially important for Babusar Top drivers.
Discuss Lake Saif-ul-Malook logistics. Confirm your driver waits at Naran while you take the local jeep.
Build buffer days. Weather can delay Babusar crossings; landslides on the main road happen occasionally.

Can I drive to Naran-Kaghan in my own Corolla?

Yes, technically. The road up to Naran is paved and manageable in a sedan. But for comfort, safety on winding sections, and any extension towards Babusar or Lulusar Lake, we recommend an SUV or Grand Cabin.

What is the cheapest way to visit Naran with family?

For a family of 8–12, a Grand Cabin at Rs. 1–1.2 lakhs for 5 days works out to about Rs. 10,000–12,000 per person total transport — cheaper than four sedans, and everyone stays together.

Is Babusar Top open all year?
